The son of German comic performer Ludwig Manfred Lommel, Ulli Lommel began his career in show business as a child. His older sister, Ruth Lommel, appeared in a number of films in the 1940s and '50s. After appearing in several features, Ulli Lommel met Rainer Werner Fassbinder and joined his acting/production entourage. While working with Fassbinder, Lommel turned to directing as well as performing. His output has ranged from brilliantly accomplished drama with traces of exploitation elements, to out-and-out B-movies with a few distinctive artistic flourishes. At one time romantically involved with Anna Karina, he has been married to actresses Suzanna Love and Katrin Schaake.
His masterpiece Die Zärtlichkeit der Wölfe (1973) was listed as one of the Top 1000 films to change your life on the book "Time Out 1000 Films to Change Your Life".In 1980 Directed one of the biggest independent hits The Boogeyman (1980) that ended up grossing $25,000,000 worldwide.
